OUTDOOR MEAL SITE
OSL provides management of the outdoor meal site for the city of Seattle, providing quality control, security, and an “exploitation” free environment. Located at 6th and Columbia, OSL was instrumental in pioneering the vision and realization of a safe, permanent, and sheltered outdoor meal site, complete with bathrooms, hand-washing facilities, and benches.
FOOD IN MOTION
Partnering with Seattle Area Food Distributors, Restaurants, Grocers and Caterers, OSL rescues more than 1500 lbs each week of nutritionally dense, healthful food before it hits the waste stream and we share this with other Seattle area Meal Providers who are unable to procure these types of ingredients for their programs. We rescue quality foods such as Halibut and wild caught Salmon, fresh produce, dairy, and artisan breads.
MEALS PARTNERSHIP COALITION
Our leadership around organizing other meal providers through the Meals Partnership Coalition since 1999 has encouraged proactive involvement. OSL is a founding partner of the Meals Partnership Coalition which functions as a resource for the member meal provider organizations throughout the Seattle area. The Meals Partnership Coalition coordinates critical outreach support for the approximately 120 known meal programs serving in the Seattle area as well as educating community leaders and the broader community, on hunger issues and the critical needs of the health-vulnerable among Seattle residents. In this vital work, OSL chairs the Meals Partnership Coalition and functions as its fiscal sponsor.
Facilitated by OSL’s Lead Instructor, Chef Paul, the Next Step training program offers nutritional education through 5 no-cost, monthly informational, hands on classes, that include nutritionally dense meal preparation, utilizing donated foods and purchases on a limited budget, label reading, safe ingredients, food safety, food borne illnesses, knife skills, and other useful food preparation tips. These classes are done inside a lab setting, in a kitchen, and are open to all who participate in OSL meals, including, but not limited to OSL clients, residents of OSL Partner Facilities, Volunteers, Meal Providers, Food Banks, and the general population. Next Step also hires individuals trained with basic meal prep skills and offers a more advanced culinary arts education. We focus on those who live un-housed, in shelters, or below the poverty level.

SERVE SEATTLE SAFELY
Seattle is lucky to have very engaged, empathetic and generous citizens who often want to do whatever they can to serve those most in need; this generosity sometimes comes in the form of direct donation of food. While this may seem to be a simple and straight-forward method of helping out it can actually do more harm than good. We’ve compiled a list of best practices for those who want to contribute.
OSL is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization
